| 1890 | First settlers came to Virginia, lured by prospects of streets paved with gold and then by the uncovering of iron deposits. |
| 1892 | Sale of lots in Virginia began. Incorporated November 12th as a village. |
| 1893 | First fire, Virginia destroyed. |
| 1895 | Incorporated February 2nd. The first city on the Iron Range. W.T. Bailey Lumber Mill started. |
| 1900 | Virginia destroyed once again by fire - All commercial buildings erected in the downtown business district thereafter were required to be of brick, stone or concrete. |
| 1909 | Virginia Rainy Lake Lumber opened. Largest white pine mill in the world. Last log run was October 9, 1929. |
| 1913 | Largest residential steam heating system in the world. |
| 1957 | The Miners Memorial Recreation Building was built in Virginia. |
| 1964 | Taconite Amendment passed. Taconite industry became a major provider of employment in the area. |
| 1970 | Thunderbird Mall built. (Valued at $4.5 Million Today) |
| 1982 | The Mining industry experienced a downslide due to the economy. Their labor force was cut by nearly half. |
| 1997 | Chestnut Street was designated as a National Historical District. |
| 1997 | Virginia and Eveleth together planned and built Progress Park, a new industrial park and building. |
| 1998 | The quad cities of Virginia, Eveleth, Mountain Iron and Gilbert worked together to plan and build the Range Recreation Civic Center, a new curling club and convention center. |
| 1999 | Medical Arts Building added to the Virginia Regional Medical Center complex. |
| 1999 | Progress Park get first tenant in VEEDA building - Entronix International, Inc. |
| 2002 | Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota builds and opens customer call center in Virginia. |
